The 2014 World Championship will be Canada's eighth appearance at the tournament with their best results coming in 1974 and 1982 when they finished 11th. In 2010 the Canadians lost all five of their pool matches, the closest being a 3-2 defeat to Turkey, and as a result they finished 21st. This was Canada's third appearance in the competition since 1990 as they also qualified for the 2002 competition in Germany. That year saw them start with a straight sets victory against Egypt, before going on to lose their other four pool matches and finishing 18th.
Canada will be keen to forget a disappointing sixth place finish at the 2014 Pan American Cup but will have renewed confidence after they bounced back to finish a solid seventh in Group 2 at the 2014 World Grand Prix, their first appearance in the competition since 2003.
The team will be looking forward to 2015 and having the opportunity to play on home territory as Toronto hosts the Pan American Games. The 2011 edition saw Canada finish seventh in Guadalajara, Mexico. At the 2013 NORCECA Championship they finished fourth after losing to Cuba in straight sets in the match for third place. They have never been NORCECA champions but finished second in both 1973 and 1989.
