Azerbaijan have competed in the World Championship twice – in 1994 and most recently in 2006. Their best finish was ninth when the tournament was hosted in Brazil 20 years ago. In their pool matches they were defeated by the Netherlands and eventual winners Cuba, but convincingly beat Peru 3-0. In the 2006 edition they qualified for the second round thanks to victories against the Dominican Republic and Mexico. In the second group stage they also beat USA and Puerto Rico, but defeats against powerhouses Brazil and the Netherlands cost them their chance to advance. They finished with a ranking of 13th.

Their one and only World Grand Prix appearance came in 2006. After qualifying for the event with a win over Russia, they went on to win one of their nine games and finish 10th.

They have competed in each of the last five European Championships with mixed success. Their best finish was fourth in their debut in 2005 but they slumped to a worst finish of 15th in last year's tournament, where they were defeated by eventual winners Russia and Croatia in Pool C.
