Following reunification of the country in 1990, the international records of East Germany and West Germany were allocated to the present national team, meaning they can boast gold medals from the European Championships of 1983 and 1987 as well as silver at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.
Germany's best result at a World Championship was a fourth place as East Germany in 1974, a result the East Germans matched 12 years later in 1986. In Japan four years ago they finished seventh after beating Serbia 3-1 in their classification match, to improve on their 2006 result of 11th. Since the country's reunification, their best result was in 1994 when they finished fifth thanks to wins against China and USA in the 5th-8th classification matches.
This year's World Grand Prix was Germany’s seventh straight appearance in the competition. They finished 10th in Group 1, and previously had taken bronze medals in 2002 and 2009. They reached the final of the European Championship last year where they lost to Russia, but bounced back in 2014 to win the European League for the first time in their history.
