Having only qualified for the World Championships once before, Cameroon will be looking to improve on their final ranking of 21st at Japan 2006. The African side were drawn into a tough pool which included Brazil and the United States, and lost all five of its Pool C matches in straight sets in Kobe. They will again meet Brazil in this year's competition, after securing their ticket to the 2014 edition by finishing top of their pool in three different continental qualifying rounds.

Cameroon claimed the silver medal at the 1999 African Championship, and repeated that performance at the 2013 edition. Victories over Algeria, Egypt, Senegal and Tunisia gave them a chance to win gold, but defeat to Kenya meant they had to settle for second. This was still a significant improvement on their fifth place finish in 2011 and signalled their return as one of the top two teams in African volleyball, six years after winning a silver medal at the 2007 All Africa Games.

The Lionesses will be hoping to receive a boost from former Cameroon men's star Jean-Rene Akono, who was appointed coach in July 2014. He replaced Joseph Nana Eone, who stepped down to become Akono's assistant.
