Victory leaves bittersweet taste in our mouths, Vermeulen says

Manon Flier scored a match-high 24 points in Netherlands win over Bulgaria

Modena, Italy. October 5, 2014 – A very entertaining match closed the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014 Pool F in Modena as the Netherlands beat Bulgaria 3-1.

Gido Vermeulen, Netherlands coach: “We are very disappointed for not being able to win the first set. We conceded a huge break and lost the chance for a better final ranking. We proved to be superior to Bulgaria after that, but this victory leaves a bittersweet taste in our mouths."

Laura Dijkema, Netherlands match captain: “Why do we suffer from these comebacks all the time? If we knew, sets and matches would end differently. Anyway we are happy we could close our World Championship with a victory."

Vladimir Kulyutkin, Bulgaria coach: “I’ve been saying it for the last six months, this is a very good team, but also a very young one. Everyone – the players, the Federation, even myself – must be patient and big results will come."

Elitsa Vasileva, Bulgaria spiker: “I can get no satisfaction from my individual offensive performance. We made many mistakes, me first, especially in reception. Moreover, the Dutch could easily exploit our blocks to score points. Things have really gone wrong tonight."
