"One big challenge after the other: that's thrilling!" says Kiraly

Christa Harmotto Dietzen swings against the Turkey block

Modena, Italy. October 1, 2014 – The USA beat Turkey 3:1 in Round 2 opening match of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014.

Karch Kiraly – Coach, USA: "We were particularly effective on the serve, and that helped us overcome a really impressive opponent. Congratulations are in order, for they have played a really good match. That’s the thrilling thing about this World Championship: you face a big challenge every day, and Bulgaria will not be easier to beat."

Christa Dietzen-Harmotto – Captain, USA: "We got a little bit frustrated by Turkey’s block, but we found the strength to recover for a bad first set inside ourselves. Now let’s get back to work: Bulgaria is a completely different opponent we must be ready for."

Massimo Barbolini – Coach, Turkey: "We heard too many “bravo” for our performances against the biggest teams, and only got one point: that does not diminish the quality of the performance we were able to produce today, but leaves a sense of regret inside us for what could have been done."

Gozde Sonsirma – Captain, Turkey: "First of all we want to congratulate the Americans for the excellent performance: they are really hard to beat, and will punish you any time you make a mistake. We were good for three sets, then we somehow gave up. That’s too bad, because it was a really decisive game for our chances to enter the final six."
