Defending champions Russia have scored a straight-set victory over Serbia to claim the last remaining open spot in Round III

Trieste, Italy, October 5, 2014 – After surviving a critical first set, defending champions Russia have scored a straight-set victory over Serbia to claim the last remaining open spot in Round III of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship on Sunday. World No. 1 Brazil defeated the United States of America in straight sets to remain the only undefeated team after nine competition days.

In Pool E, Italy have handed China their first defeat in nine games at these World Championships, winning in Bari 3-1. The victory gives Italy first place in Pool E. The hosts will avoid Brazil in Round III who have claimed the other seeded spot from Pool F. China will follow Italy, as well as the Dominican Republic, on the plane to the capital of Lombardy Monday morning.

World No. 1 Brazil have continued their winning streak at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship on Sunday by defeating the United States of America in straight sets. It was the first loss for the USA. The win secures first place in Pool F for the South Americans. USA finish second in the pool and join Brazil and Russia on the trip to Milan.

Japan have handed the Dominican Republic their second defeat in eight matches finishing the match in Bari 3-1 to claim fourth place in Pool E and 7th overall at these World Championships. Germany shut out Azerbaijan 3-0 in Trieste to secure fifth place in Pool E. Belgium concluded their World Championships adventure with a 3-1 win over Croatia in Trieste. The result allows Belgium to climb back to sixth place in Pool E, for an overall ranking of 11th in the competition. Croatia dropped to seventh, for 13th overall.

Turkey have swept Kazakhstan 3-0 to secure a fifth place finish in Pool F for a 9th overall rank at the FIVB 2014 Women’s World Championships. The Netherlands recovered completely from a difficult first set and have beaten Bulgaria 3-1 in Modena. Nonetheless, that first set clinched sixth place in the Pool F standings for Bulgaria on set ratio, leaving the Netherlands seventh. Kazakhstan finished bottom of the pool for 15th overall. 

The second round of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship ended on Sunday with the fourth and last competition day of Round II. The competition will resume on Wednesday with the third tournament phase. The Drawing of Lots to determine the composition of Pools G and H in Round III will be held on Monday at 14:00.

A total of 32 matches were played during the second phase of the tournament, running from October 1-5 in the Italian cities of Bari, Trieste, Verona and Modena with the best three teams of Pool E and Pool F advancing to the third competition round.
