USA say they were forced to adjust against North American rivals

Mexico coach Jorge Miguel Azair said his side suffered from a lack of experience in their encounter with USA on Tuesday

Verona, Italy, September 23, 2014 - Comments from captains and coaches of the USA and Mexico teams after USA Mexico at PalaOlimpia on Tuesday.

USA captain Christa Harmotto Dietzen:

“I thought Mexico played great defence. They came out fired up and got a good lead but we were definitely challenged. I think it’s good to be challenged early in the tournament, we take our hats off to Mexico and I’m glad we figured it out. We talked about it before the match about taking every team with the same intensity and focus, no matter who is in front of us. They forced us to respond.”

“It’s a quick turnaround. We eat, recover and begin scouting for Kazakhstan tomorrow. We will watch the attackers, then go over the rotations tomorrow before the match. The good thing is we have videos on these teams from before, so we started to watch some film on them.”

USA coach Karch Kiraly:

“We weren’t happy with the way we came out. Mexico came out strong and gave us some nice serves. We did a poor job of handling them and we cleaned it up a little after that. The good news is we made some adjustments, notched the ‘W’ (win) and we have a quick turnaround now.”

“We’ve got lots of people who’ve never played in a World Championship before, so we got through that and did better.”

“We’ve got to get to bed after a shower and food. We’re going to watch videos in the morning because it’s getting a little late.”

Mexico's captain Andrea Rangel:

“We started off very well in the first set, but we lacked in concentration in the other ones, so this is what we'll try to improve in the next matches.”

Mexico's coach Jorge Miguel Azair:

“We were playing against a strong team, and in my opinion the third set was flawed by four decisions of the referee against us. We suffered the lack of experience in this kind of competition and we have to fix a few things in our game but I am positive for tomorrow's match.”
