Dominican Republic have played at the World Championship on six occasions, including the last four tournaments dating back to 1998. Their best result is 11th place in 1998, but they have struggled since then with subsequent rankings of 13th in 2002 and 17th in both the 2006 and 2010 tournaments. Four years ago, a 3-1 victory over Canada was the only positive for a Dominican Republic side who lost all four of their other matches in Pool D.

Dominican Republic's biggest success on the world stage has been the bronze medal at the 2009 Grand Champions Cup in Japan. Their other notable successes are winning gold medals at the 2003 Pan American Games, the 2009 NORCECA Championship and the Pan American Cups of 2008 and 2010. The team, known as the Queens of the Caribbean, participated at the Athens 2004 and London 2012 Olympic Games, finishing fifth at the latter. They have competed at the World Cup three times, most recently finishing eighth in 2011.

In the lead up to the 2014 World Championship, Dominican Republic received a timely boost to morale by winning the Pan American Cup, but could not continue their winning ways at the 2014 World Grand Prix where they finished bottom of Group 1.
