Walter Rusich: Trieste has responded very well to the call for volunteers
Trieste, Italy, July 28, 2014 - A team of trained and enthusiastic volunteers is an essential ingredient of any large sporting event. The FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship is no exception, and forty volunteers will be recruited to complete the team in Trieste.
Two months before the beginning of the competition, the recruitment process for volunteers is almost complete. The teams in place for the big event from September 23 to October 12 have, in fact, already been put to the test - in the form of an FIVB Volleyball World League match in May. The match served as a preliminary verification of the local organising machine ahead of the FIVB Women’s World Championship Italy 2014. The two events are not comparable in terms of scale, but the FIVB's compliments to the 80 volunteers on call for the World League match between Italy and Iran are a good beginning.
Walter Rusich, who is President of Trieste's Provincial Committee, said: "For the Women’s World Championship Italy 2014, we need at least 200 volunteers. That is a very large number, but the team is already almost complete. We are still looking for about forty people, especially drivers. Transport is an important part of organising a competition like this one. We are also recruiting boys and girls to respond to the many requests we will receive during the competition. The preference will go to those who have atleast a basic knowledge of English, which is important to be able to communicate with the staff of different national teams efficiently."
A wide variety of jobs is available to volunteers, going from administrative work, working as hosts and hostesses to working as a driver. Volunteers can expect to play an important role behind the scenes. "The great leaders are important, but the volunteers are more important," said Rusich.
Where do volunteers come from and what is their average age? The usual minumum age is 18 or 20, but all ages above that are well represented, with many volunteers in their thirties and forties. About half of the volunteers are women.
Trieste has responded very well to the call for volunteers. Help will also come from neighbouring Gorizia. Walter Rusich said: "Gorizia is giving us a big hand and will play an important role in the success of the FIVB Women’s World Championship".
