The 2014 World Championship will be Turkey's third appearance at the competition, having made their debut in 2006. They progressed from their first round pool after defeating Egypt and Peru, but victories against Chinese Taipei and Poland in the second group stage were not enough to secure a semifinal berth. They beat Germany and lost to USA in classification matches to take 10th place. They were more successful in 2010 when they won three first round matches to progress, but two defeats in the group stage again denied them a place in the semifinals. They beat Italy in straight sets in their classification match to finish sixth.

Turkey have recorded a significant improvement in their performances over recent years. They achieved their best result at the 2012 World Grand Prix when they took bronze behind the United States and Brazil. They came eighth last year in their third outing but returned to form in 2014 by finishing fourth in the Final Six stage of Group 1. They took two silvers and a bronze in the European League between 2009 and 2011, and also claimed bronze at the 2011 European Championship.

They made their Olympic Games debut at London 2012 where they recorded wins over Serbia and Korea, finishing ninth overall. The team are known as Filenin Sultanlan, which translates as the 'Sultans of the Net'.

Massimo Barbolini

Massimo Barbolini

Massimo Barbolini led Turkey to a third-place finish at the 2012 World Grand Prix, having picked up three bronze medals in the tournament as coach of Italy's women. Since injury forced him to retire from playing at the age of 20, the Italian has forged a brilliant coaching career. He was at the reins when the Azzurre won back-to-back World Cups in 2007 and 2011. He also led the Italians to equal fifth place at the 2008 Olympic Games. A trophy-laden spell at club level in his homeland saw him win the Champions League and CEV Cup twice apiece.
